this just happened! Airway Emergency

3/19/2019

Early into my shift I was called for an allergic reaction emergency on room #27 of the ER. When I got there I found a patient with a tongue so swollen, that he could hardly talk. the tissue under his tongue and tongue itself was swollen to the point it was starting to NOT fit inside his mouth.

He had a prior history of the same in the past and had resulted in the need for intubation (placing a tube in his airway) for protection of his breathing and management of the swelling. This patient had these symptoms develop quit acutely over the last hour prior to presentation.
So fairly quickly we made the decision to intubate the patient.

In this video you will see actual footage of the intubation taking place.

Insulin Sliding Scale

3/11/2019

2 out of my first 5 patients today were diabetics coming in for uncontrolled blood sugars in the 400s and 500s. I am going to be putting both patients in a sliding insulin scale, so I figured I would make a video explaining what that is, how to do it, and when should the patient seek emergent medical attention.
